SlingBox do not support caption or subtitle

10 04 2006

SlingBox SlingBox device is similar to TIVO but it allows you to watch it over desktop PC, laptop, and/or even Pocket PC while you are on road or so. Of course, it doesn’t support closed captioning or subtitle. Read on:

 Dear Grant ,

Thank you for contacting Sling Media support.

I understand that you are interested in Closed Captioning and the SlingBox™. Just last week I played a DVD with Subtitles. Now I do realize that this is a recorded media that has the subtitles in the formatting of the disk. Closed Captioning is usually a feature of the television you are using, of which the SlingBox does not have at this time. It is something that is up for consideration in future generations of the SlingBox, but unfortunately do not have a resolution now.

For future reference your Sling Media email support ticket number is 9898.

Best regards,
Sling Media Support

Description: I am thinking about purchase slingbox. I have a question.

Does it support closed captioning or subtitle? Without it, I wouldn’t be interested because I wouldn’t understand it because I am deaf.

Let me know. Smile!

I was disappointed when I found out it did not have CC. Funny thing is that, while technology advance for deaf user (such as VRS, IM, etc) there are as well a big gap for deaf user as well! (cnn.com, this, and ipod tv shows not being cc’d!)

Guess we cant have everything, but again, its not fair.. isnt it? How can we help them see the way we see it?

Yeah, couldn’t live without the captions! Captioning’s like our water to survive. Heh.

I see that you’ve started using Wordpress. Wow, more and more people are starting to use Wordpress. Cool.

Keep blogging on!

All the more reason that we need legislation to mandate design for accessibility.

i have two slingboxes and closed captions works fine with Directv. Directv Hd and HDDVR box have the closed caption decoder built in and then outputs the closed captions to the tv. The closed cations are then also on slingbox. My wife, who is deaf, and i travel all the time and are always watching our tv via slingbox in the airport with closed captions.

Wolfgang,

No kidding? Maybe you can give me more details such as what Slingbox model you have and where do we find more information before we buy it, etc. Appreciated it.
