What a cool idea!
That’s mean you can use your laptop, PDA, or another device that support 802.11b wireless technology at many places and able to read “transcripts” during the event. It said it do support both pre-programmed and real-time captioning.
It gave few example such as baseball stadiums, coffee shops, etc but I was thinking like airport, hotel and even at home, too. It can be many things but it will implement slowly depending how hard we push and how much we demand from this technology.
As you know that future cell phone including T-Mobile Sidekick device probably will support 802.11b wireless technology. You can just read captioning on Sidekick – that would be cool wouldn’t it?
In COMMplements, captions are sent by a venue’s transmitter via standard wireless technology - the 802.11b wireless protocol - to a receiver device, such as a personal digital assistant (PDA), which also displays captions, West explained. The 802.11b wireless technology is already installed in many places, such as baseball stadiums, coffee shops and restaurants, and even urban business districts.
