Fire by school

27 11 2005

Fire by schoolWhen I am on my way to work, I saw big fire inside dumpster near Liberty Junior High. It was bad because of strong wild — it might spread to other area but it didnt. Firetruck arrived eventually and got it under control.

Sorry, the picture is bad — my PocketPC doesnt do very good in dark.

DHH DFW - Special Announcement

26 11 2005

DHH DFW fans,

Deaf Happy Hours – Dallas / Fort Worth (DHH-DFW) will enter 3rd year in January 2006 with strong numbers of supporters in past two years. DHH Team has been successfully hosting different places all over DFW metroplex. We are always looking hard to find us good place for everyone to enjoy – it’s always a challenge to find “perfect” place.

We are very excited to announce that DHH DFW will host its 1st annual NYE event at Dave & Buster on I-35 in Dallas. (Note: We did not host NYE last year) We believe this is perfect place where everyone can enjoy all night long. Sure, you still need to purchase food and drinks there – and don’t forget extra money for playing video games and other stuff.

We had a lot of fun this year with our wonderful committee members – we want to thank them for their full support — Sam Dunn, Stephanie Clements, and Bruce Capen, Ronnie Smith Jr. We also want to thank Sam Dunn for doing the website project and Ronnie Smith Jr. for the photography.

Ronnie Smith Jr from Fort Worth and Stephanie Clements from Richardson will be our next new co-host for DHH DFW 2006. They promise to deliver more excitements for us all. We will host on every 4th Saturday except November and December. (different date) Also, we are looking few more committees. If interested, please email us at host@dhhdfw.com

One more thing – I want to thank Julie Reese, our DHH DFW founder for making it possible. DHH DFW will not be around if she never started it.

If you have any question, comment, or suggestion to improve DHH DFW, please email us at host@dhhdfw.com

Best Regards,
Grant W Laird Jr.

What is CableCard?

24 11 2005

Cablecard picture

Misty and I want to have our own HDTV entertainment center for past two years. We finally had opportunity to look for it since we felt it is right time to shopping this year.

In fact, we just got our new HDTV under Mitsubishi brand. It is quite expensive but I hope it’s worth investment and as well as entertainment for our family. I also decided to go with DLP Technology under Texas Instruments which is supposed to be superior over another technology right now.

Past few days, I learned great deal about it such as cable card, high-definition format, TV guide program, HDMI-to-DVI, etc.

Since we already have existing basic cable plan, we have to call and upgrade our plan – this way we can view it in high-definition channels. At this point, we learned the difference between cable card and cable box. Basically, we don’t need cable box if you just want regular cable plan excluding Pay-Per-View (PPV), On-Demand, and other two-way services.

Cable card v1.0 is PMCIA size card and cableman simply insert it in back of the HDTV. (one time small fee but no extra monthly fee compare to lease cable box) It took few minutes to recognize its own IP address then it’s ready to go. It’s important to know about this because you cannot take advantage of digital caption if you are using cable box. In other word, you would have to use cable box’s digital caption setup. With cable card, it’s simply come straight with built-in cable box and it works like charm.

According to sources, there will be cable card v2.0 which supports PPV, On-Demand and other two-way services. Also, Microsoft will have its own Media Center on cable card in late 2006. I was amazing because I never knew about it till I got it – learned hard and fast way.

Anyway, I found good information that you should read if you want to understand better about cable card.
