Toby - Deaf Dog

1 09 2006

It’s been over a year since we adopted our deaf dog – Toby.

It’s been wonderful experience for all of us. He is always attention grabber especially our visitors – he’s always so exciting to see them. Sometime he would bark at them. Everyone always said he’s sooo cute but he’s one who is most mischief in my house.

Toby - puppyI taught him how to speak with dog treat. Once he finally learned how to do it, he was so loud; it caused another two dogs not to bark at all. They think Toby is freak dude. I always make sure he’s with us, sometime he fell asleep on floor – I can’t call him, I had to wake him up by gently shake him. This way he won’t get so jumpy. Typically, Toby always follows with my other two dogs especially at backyard. When they bark at birds, squirrels, or neighbor dogs, Toby will copy them too. Silly boy. He has a tag saying "Toby - Deaf" with home address.

In long run, it’s worth to have Toby. Oh yeah, my another dog Hobbit - he’s still my buddy, too :)

You can look up more about deaf dogs at http://www.deafdogs.org/

Also, you can look up http://www.petfinder.com – since they doesn’t have search box specifically for deaf dogs. The trick is go to www.google.com and type

petfinder.com: deaf

just like that and you will able to view better results. Click here.

I got a deaf dog recently.. He is well behaved so far and I have worked with him in my few signs like potty, eat, sit, bark and stay. After he got the neutered when he was 5 months old, and trained him in crate (cage), and always put on leash, and everything are paid off, and Frankie is doing really well, and well behaved, but he is a little sneaky on foods.

I got the link of deaf dog website from Misty, your wife while back and I thanked her for sharing with me…

Never had a deaf dog or cat before… my friend has a deaf cat and it is all white with blue eyes. That’s common to be deaf. Your dog Toby is cute.. :-)

Hi,

The link below is to a newspaper article about a deaf dog who saved a woman in SD. I though you might be able to use it to show the world how great they are.

I rescued this dog from Rapid City Humane Society 6 years ago. He lived with me until I moved to Thailand. That is when I placed him with Barb Garrison, the woman he saved. He had only been with her 5 months, but still they are very close. When she fell and was knocked unconscious in the cold Clancy, the Ausi, went to a neighbor working out side. He repeatedly hit nosed the man in the back of the calf, bounce back in the direction of barb, barked and did it again. The mans saw the leash,on Clancy, took the hint, looked around and noticed Barb. What a good dog!
