[...] I mentioned about Deaf Life Magazine last week at my blog — speak of devil. I received Deaf Life Magazine postcard few days ago that magazine will resume this month. (January 2007) Basically it asks if I want to continue my subscription with magazine or ask for money refund. It also asks if I need to update mail address and/or email address.
Deaf Rochester is more of local-based newsletter and I live in Texas. Haha...

NADMag is membership-based magazine and you only get it four times a year.

I've lost counting on Deaf Life Magazine credits. I trust they will take care of it. We will find out soon enough :)

And yet if you go to a Barnes & Noble store or other book/magazine store, it is mind-boggling to see the depth and variety of magazines available. My son is into skateboarding, which is a pretty narrow interest, and yet there are several skateboarding publications for him to choose from. Thus it is pretty sad that the deaf community, which numbers in the millions, is seemingly unable to sustain any print publications for any length of time. What's the matter with us?

I'm surprised to hear about SignNews and NADMag. I noticed there was no mention of NADMag on Jamie Berke's list on about.com....that got me wondering...guess Jamie just forgot to mention it.

What about Deaf Rochester?

Are you getting credit with DeafLife? Will they send new issues for free until your two years is finally up?

You can print the articles off the Internet and then read them in the bathroom. That should not be of a problem.

For those who did not know, USA-L News has been around for 11 years. It started out as a private e-mail distribution, the went to eGroup which was bought by Yahoo. It is now with Deaf Times.

You can always be updated via e-mail and/or pager.

Some have said USA-L News put Deaf publications out of business. I disagree because technology has change the whole field of printed publications, not just for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. How many publications have gone out of business? The only publications that seem to survived are magazines.

Maybe you should find something more educational to read when you go to the bathroom.

Grant, I highly reccomend The Thrifty Nickel for bathroom reading. My husband couldn't live without it!

I have found that anything any deaf person can publish as a newspaper or a magazine is just a re-run of what we have already read online.

Respectfully, Lantana

Poor Grant! Reading in bathroom? that long? It is a good way to get hemorroids! This is what health magazine said few years ago.. sitting too long at toilet is a good way to get hemorroids.

It's just too hard to meet the major expenses of printing and postage (not to mention rent, utilities, marketing, writer/photographer fees, etc.) from the meager income from subscriptions and advertising.

Too many people pass around the same paper or read the one at work instead of getting their own subscription, and not enough businesses are able or willing to advertise to the deaf audience.

The only way a print publication will succeed in the deaf community is if it's subsidized by a well-off organization. Thus it's surprising to hear that the CSD and NAD publications are having problems.

I started Deafweekly 2-1/2 years ago and it's been really nice not having to pay thousands and thousands of dollars to the printer and post office. But I miss taking pictures and doing page layout ...
