11 05 2007

ASL Video - 3:29 Minutes Long

Grant W Laird Jr talked about Spider-Man 3 movie which released last week - he was impressed that captioned available same day as Spider-man 3 movie released.

He also talked about little about Insight Cinema (Open Captioned) and Rear Closed Captioning.

Grant — Major movie studios/distributors (voluntarily) provide captions for a majority of their wide/general releases of new movies. Captions are formatted to be displayed using Rear Window Caption (RWC) equipment (captions seen only by individuals in the audience who have the required caption display devices; some people call this “closed captions”; I call it “individual” or “seat-based” captions) and DTS Cinema Subtitling System (DTS-CSS) equipment (some people call this “open captions”; I call it “closed captions”; captions can be turned on/off; everyone in the audience sees the captions when turned on; just like closed captions on TV). A computer disk containing the caption codes (for both RWC and DTS-CSS) is distributed to theaters that have the equipment. The disks are distributed at the same time the movie is released. Therefore, with RWC and DTS-CSS, it is possible to display captions on the first day the movie is released. This is a significant advantage of these caption display systems.
Some movie studios/distributors are also still providing “open caption” film prints (captions laser etched onto the film print; can’t be turned on/off; everyone in the audience sees the captions) to InSight Cinema for distribution to theaters that do not have RWC or DTS-CSS caption display systems. InSight Cinema’s website list of movies includes both the schedule for open caption film prints AND movies being shown with DTS-CSS captions (primarily Regal theaters around the country).
For more information about captioned movies, see “Updates,” “Technologies,” and “Timeline” links at http://www.nad.org/movietheatercaptioning.
You may also be interested in emerging movie caption display systems such as the ones demonstrated by Regal recently. See http://blogs.nad.org/advocacy/?p=38.
I agree that http://www.Fomdi.com is a great tool to find captioned movies. Note, however, that some movie theaters do not yet list their captioned movie showings online in a way that Fomdi can find them (such as http://www.consolidatedmovies.com/rwc.asp).

The scheduling for Insight sponsored movies depends on transporting the movie reels– as Ms. Crawford said, the film itself is etched (letters are scratched out from the film itself) and there are only a few OC etched film reels, and they’re put on a “tour” of cities throughout the USA. I remember once wanting to see Star Trek Nemesis which was going to be OC on my birthday, and the movie started and turned out to be “My Big Fat Greek Wedding!” without OC! The manager told us that they didn’t even get the OC movie reel in that day (sunday) so I had to go back two days later when they finally had it.

I just saw Spiderman 3 DTS-CSS captioned, first time seeing a DTS-CSS OC movie. I liked it, although the subtitles were pretty faint and hard to see in brighter scenes. Good thing most of the movie was dark heh.
