Deaf Voice
2 09 2007ASL Video – Approx 3:11 Minutes Long
Grant talked about his own “deaf” voice — he acknowledged that he does make noise during the conversation from time to time. (Such as laughing, moody, upset, etc.) He usually don’t care when he’s chatting with friends at home, videophone, deaf club, conference, vlog, etc. but however he usually know better and try to keep quiet during special banquet, library, school, etc. You would be surprised that some of us have spooky voice even they didn’t mean to.
He knew one recent incident when he did videotaped for his friend during conference. His friend got upset and told Grant that his interview in ASL was horrible because camcorder picked up noisy from other deaf people’s voice nearby.
Does it bother you guys when someone made funny or weird voice during the conversation?

Some deaf people do make some fart sounds. That can be embarrassing. LOL I remember some people getting spooked by some deaf people making the throat noises. For example, one deaf man stared and was making “growling” sounds at us, which freaked some people out. I realized later that some deaf people like to feel sounds in throat and probably don’t realize that making those sounds can be scary to other hearing people. I thought I am very quiet but my hearing housemate told me that he could hear me laughing outloud while chatting with someone online. I didn’t realize that I was making some sounds. Oh well….you raised good points. Hey, do me a favor…try looking at the camera while signing rather than looking away from the camera.
your not only one person who make any noise but I just learned that my daughter just watch one of my vlog and she told me that she heard my 2 dogs barks lots at background while I do on vlog (oh no!!) but oh well…. one of my friend tends to make noise when he talks but it doesnt bother my kids at all… they get used to it but really dont know why they tends to do that … really very interesting topic..

How about just turn off the microphone control on your computer?
Some deaf people even make noises while walking or sitting or reading but don’t realize it.
I remember when I was in the classroom at Gallaudet, I thought I heard something like “mmmm” or humming sound. I had a hearing aid on that time. I looked around and wondered where it came from. LOL I later found out the girl sitting next to me made humming sound. After the class, I asked her if she realized she was making a humming sound. She blushed and said yes hearing people had told her. She said she sometimes caught herself making that sound. She said she cant help it. LOL
Recently, somebody told me via Youtube that I made noises while signing. (One of my vlog had a cricket in the background, I was told, and it drove him nuts!)
And all I can say is: “so what?”
I don’t know how to muffle my webcam to turn off sounds. But I think it is okay– I didn’t growl, or fart or anything impolite– so why are hearing people making it into a big deal? Are they surprised that Deaf people are not quiet? Just because we don’t speak does not mean we are mute!
Like you, I do make efforts to be quiet at certain places (funeral home, library, et cetera), but I never feel that my noises are annoying and I never get any negative reactions in public places.
Isn’t this a repost?
drmzz: I posted it via youtube directly but not thru my blogsite till today. Also, for some reason – deafvideo.tv no longer display this same video on their site.

Yea, two of my vids disappeared there too.
I have a deaf friend who usually isn’t too loud but when she starts to talk about something that is very personally emotional for her, her voice rises and everyone in the store would be staring at her! When I first met her, I was speechless, didn’t know what to say. I don’t care what others are thinking, but I was wondering if she was aware of how her voice rise up and down with emotion. Finally, after while, I told her that she’s loud. She replied, “I know, I can’t help it. But thanks for reminding me”. lol so…I just let her know with my expression and she reduces her voice. I don’t care what other people think. The only exception would be if she was somewhere where she has to be quiet..then I will sign voice and thumbs down. She’ll be like oh, ok. smile.
I think it would be a service to remind deaf that they are loud and that others are “disturbed”, for better word. Some deaf don’t pay attention to reaction of others around them. Starring is one thing, but they stare all the time so how’s deaf person supposed to know why they are starring? signs or voice?
One annoying pet peeve of mine and that is why DEAF people who cannot hear a thing has no business learing how to speak!!! is all that LOUD Buh Puh mmah all those sounds they make and they learned it all from speech classes.
My husband’s family who is against sign language is always complaining that my hubby is loud. Well, I told them they made a BIG mistake sending him to that Oral school in St. Louis. “you got what you paid for!”. End of discussion. Why anyone would force speech on a profoundly deaf person is beyond me.
THERE IS DEAF IS NOBODY PERFECT BY VOICE CUZ DEAF CANNOT HIMSELF OR HERSELF HEAR VOICE COUPLES DEAF DONT WEAR HEARING AIDS ALL LIFE CUZ VOICE MY SUGGEST EVERYONE IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH MY VOICE THEN EVERYONE DEAF HAVE VOLUME TURN ON OR OFF VOICEBOX ADJUST 1 TO 10 I USALLY WEAR HEARING AIDS GREW UP I CAN HEAR DIFFERENT SOUND BUT NOW NO MORE DUE DOG ATE MY HEARING AIDS GGGRRR WELL I LIKE BEING DEAF NO MORE HOLLOW ADJUST VOICEBOX OFF AND MIND OF PEACE WE DONT NEED DEAF VOICE ON COMPUTER CAUSE DEAF COMPUTER IS COMPLETE DEAF COMPUTER NATURE IF HEARING WANT COMPUTER THEN THEY CAN TURN OFF AND ON THEY KNOW WHO AM I BEING DEAF DONT NEED VOICE
I am an interpreter for long time.
I remember in past when I was interpreting for a doctor appointment, my client would voice without knowing it, and was much louder than me. I did not want to tell deaf person to turn off their voice. They had that right. The doctor had told me that he cant hear us both and that we should take turns talking to him so he could then hear us both. I just interpreted this to client, and it worked out well. (My client did not realize it confuse, and told me to turn off my voice instead.)
Now I work alot as a VI for a local VRS company. I love when I can hear background sounds from video. I guess it make me feel more balanced. Since I hear sounds background from hearing caller. When deaf person laughs or gets angry I want to be able to hear that as well. Yeah, I know it is obvious from facial expression. But still I like to hear it. Do not turn off sounds for others. If they dont want to hear it, then they can turn off volume on their computer or videophone.
I know what you mean! So glad that you brought it up because I always do my best not to make any noisy voice at work. Some people came to me and asked me if I was okay. I was puzzled and I asked them why. They didn’t say anything..they walked off. I had to figure out what it was about and then I guess that it was my funny voice. I had to use my tongue between my teeth to keep my voice quiet! At that time, I was working at EFTC corp. just like HP or IBM companies.
no no no it is not a big mistake! I am profoundly deaf and I am glad I can talk even though it is not understable to general public 100%. I sign very well that many people thought I sign all of my life. LOL Sometimes I talk loud when excited and friends and family remind me. When in public, I talk like a whisper. LOL
It does not bother me.
oops I mistyped lol I mean understandable not understable
When I walk in the office, people would know it was me because they told me my walking makes a lot of noise (”shuffling”). How embarassing. Since then, I’m very mindful of the way I walk.
In the past, people would tell me that my nose was making a whitling noise.Of course, I was embarrassed so I had to breath though my mouth instead of my nose. They had me worried about making noise with my mouth breathing too, even though they didn’t say anything about it. I realize that they were not being fair to me. I felt controlled so I decided that I don’t give a damn about what they were complaining about. If I can’t help it then they have to put up with it! Some the noises can’t be controlled sometimes.
My wife’s hearing is deteriorating and she now speaks very loud. I can almost live with it but our children (no hearing problems) are now learning to speak very loud, almost shouting. How can I tell her the problem without hurting her or having her go ballistic, she’s very sensitive.
Thanks!
