Assassin’s Creed – Lack of Subtitle

20 01 2008

ASL Video - Approx 3:30 Minutes Long

Not too long ago, Grant borrowed from his older daughter an Xbox 360 game called Assassin’s Creed (Ubisoft Publisher) which recently released in November 2007. It has become one of the most popular games today.

He managed to go thru first stage of game “How to play with controller” episode before start real game. Once he entered, he got lost and confusing because several characters kept talking to me thru the game – he just gave it up and returned game back to his daughter.

He looked up Google and found out he’s not alone – there are many complaints at Ubisoft official forum. He made his part by register and made the comment. It is not just about deaf and hard of hearing who need subtitle, there are many foreigners that are not good with English – they depend on subtitle to play.

Gamer Informer article - February 2008Grant applauded commenter Robert Nunn who wrote to “To the Editor” on Game Informer magazine (February 2008 edition; page 12) regarding lack of subtitle on this game. Hopefully it will push Ubisoft to offer subtitle patch/upgrade in near future. To see scanned article from magazine, click here.

Did you know that many store such as Wal-mart of Target will not honor opened game box regardless? Several Deaf gamers purchased and got stuck with it. If you purchase game thru GameStop store, you might have little luck.

Ironically, Assassin’s Creed – Nintendo DS version now support subtitle.

Hello Grant. it not really first time happen to me. i was pretty upset about it. after i make few call to Ubisoft’s developer’s office about that issue. at that time, i was very luck because i did went to Best Buy and make it replace it with other game. they willing do it for me. back to the game. i not really think it ubisoft’s fault that they did not make subtitles to be available to use on this game. so the possible of have ubisoft developer patch to fix patch is very slim. but there possible it to have done.

note to Grants and rest of gamer who read this. i have playstation 3 i would love to have play with any of you who do play online and possible play in future

That would be great if there are subtitles. Not only games, but also other shows

Only weird thing you mention it…. when I play Prince of Persia: Two Thrones on Gamecube. There was no subtitle. However, I was thrill how I liked to play. So, I decide buy Prince of Persia: Warrior Within which is before Two Thrones follow the story. I realize there was subtitle. I felt hurt.

Now you mentioned about the lack of subtitle on the game, I remember that there was a Playstation2 game called “Grandia III” since I love playing Grandia games since they already have subtitle on it until Grandia III when I found out that it don’t have a subtitle and lost my interest in that game and haven’t been play it for almost two years. It already ticked me off.

Here the blog for that is:

Yes, it’s one of the reason why I like playing foreign RPGs. For example, Japanese imported to America. These imported games almost always have translation and subtitle because the characters are originally speaking in Japanese. Plus RPGs usually have a lot of information in subtitling that help in solving quests.

I have seen letters of complaints from Deaf/HOH players on game forums for MMORPGs and gaming consoles that can be played either alone or online. So you’re not alone :)

Did you see this: Subtitles a video gaming necessity?

I think best is to send a letter to Ubisoft. Letters straight to the company works best. Companies like to hear from their consumers.

I have Super Mario Galaxy game and it is champ! It is subtitled thru talking balloons. Wii is very addictive especially this game! That game is the best of all Wii games according to reviews. There will be more wave of new games this year 2008 for Wii, which is good news. I hope they all are subtitled.

I agree with you, games should be subtitled. That is why Microsoft subtitled Halo 2 because many people were complaining and I was once in a EGM magazine talking about Halo and they published me as the Letter of the Month! The website that I have my article is on:

Hi Grant,

I totally agree with you. I think ALL video games should have Subtitles. I thought about this when I rent a game called Batman for Playstation 2. I am a student learning ASL.
